DREAMers Become Leaders at 窪蹋勛圖厙

  • June 24, 2022

Last fall, 窪蹋勛圖厙 launched a new initiative to help undocumented students earn money for college while developing themselves as community service leaders. As participants in the Dreamers Leadership Development Program, 窪蹋勛圖厙 students complete community service hours on or off-campus.

Students benefit by making a difference in the 窪蹋勛圖厙 community, taking on challenging roles, learning new skills, and more, said Lizette Ponthier, the director of financial aid at 窪蹋勛圖厙.

Students have many options for completing their service hours.

They can volunteer at the PUMA Center, Outreach, 窪蹋勛圖厙 Food Pantry, etc. Students can also assist with college events, said Ponthier.

Participants who meet certain eligibility requirements may also apply for the CA Dream Act Service Incentive Grant. If qualified, the student may receive as much as $1500 per semester for up to 8 semesters.

How Does It Work?

Any enrolled student at 窪蹋勛圖厙 may participate; however, only students who meet eligibility requirements may apply for the grant. Approved applicants will receive funds after completing their service hours each semester. Awards are pro-rated based on the students enrollment units.

Benefits

  • Gain work experience through volunteer service
  • Develop leadership skills
  • Build confidence
  • Learn new skills that support career advancement

The grant application involves a few steps so we encourage students to work with staff who can guide them, said Ponthier.
